On the morning of Holy Friday, we parked our car in front of a vulcanizing shop to get both our front tires changed to gear up for a 2-hour drive. I was inside the car browsing through my news feed when a group of shirtless men hitting their bleeding backs, passed by. It was amusing and not at the same time. I have seen this pilgrim every year on TV, newspapers and social media so there’s nothing new to this except that this time, I was amused to see this with my very own eyes. Sometimes we look at the mirror and feel bad about what we see. Those annoying pimples and those belly fats bulging out. That kinky hair or that super skinny body. So ugly, you may tell yourself. Continue reading “When You Don’t Feel Good About Your Body”
I was at my lowest yesterday. I couldn’t understand myself. I was so demotivated at work. I was lazy and I didn’t want do anything. I was analyzing what the problem is. My bosses are good and we have an amazing team in the department. The company is good. The people in the island treats me well. So whats wrong? Maybe I am just burned out or over worked. Andaming ganap sa buhay ko. Kape sa umaga, kape bago magtanghali, kape matapos mananghalian, kape bago magmeryenda, kape ulit ang meryenda. It was a slow and easy Sunday and my mind was wandering while I was in the morning briefing.
It was the ‘around the table’ time and it was our time to bring our news or any info to the table. My turn came and I didn’t have anything important to say. I then listened to what my other colleagues had to say. Continue reading “Island Guys – Doctor Quail”
Continue reading “The Privileged Ozzy”
Ifemelu and Obinze are young and in love when they depart military-ruled Nigeria for the West. Beautiful, self-assured Ifemelu heads for America, where despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple with what it means to be black for the first time. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London. Fifteen years later, they reunite in a newly democratic Nigeria, and reignite their passion—for each other and for their homeland.
