K-Drama Series

It’s been a while since a I last watched K-Drama.  I have more time now so I could not help but stay up all night and binge-watch some series. I’ve watched 3 drama series and 1 movie over the last few weeks and here’s my take on them (no spoilers here):

100 Days My Prince

Lee Yool (Crown Prince) falls off a cliff and nearly dies in an attempted assassination. He loses his memory, and wanders for 100 days under a new name and personality. During this period, he meets Hong Sim, head of the first detective agency in Joseon.

Crying Lady Levels – 8/10

Romance / Kilig Levels – 9/10

Comedy –  9/10

Action – 10/10

Stress / Heart Attack Levels – 10/10

I love the series because it is quite ‘light’ in a way although there are heavy and stressful political parts which is usually included in most Joseon Dynasty type movies. It’s cute and romantic although it did not really pull a lot of heartstrings and it did not make me cry as much as any of the previous series I’ve seen.

Parasite

Ki Taek’s family of four is close, but fully unemployed, with a bleak future ahead of them. The son Ki Woo is recommended by his friend, a student at a prestigious university, for a well-paid tutoring job, spawning hopes of a regular income. Carrying the expectations of all his family, Ki Woo heads to the Park family home for an interview. Arriving at the house of Mr. Park, the owner of a global IT firm, Ki Woo meets Yeon Kyo, the beautiful young lady of the house. But following this first meeting between the two families, an unstoppable string of mishaps lies in wait.

I’ve been wanting to watch this because all of the hype and finally I can say it’s worth it. The movie gave me mild heart attacks until the end. It is stressful and sad. And it showed a different kind of South Korean lifestyle, not the usual that we see in K-Dramas where students and part timers still get to eat and drink in fancy cafes all the time.

Crash Landing on You

The absolute top secret love story of a chaebol heiress who made an emergency landing in North Korea because of a paragliding accident and a North Korean special officer who falls in love with her and who is hiding and protecting her.

I’m quite late with this but it’s better late than never. This series is just kilig all the way. I like the fun friendship of Capt Ri, Yoon Seri and the four soldiers, their bonding scenes are good for the heart after so many stressful fighting and betrayals.  No series have made me cry this much after the Descendants of the Sun (or maybe because I haven’t watched a lot of series since that). I did not only cry for Capt Ri and Yoon Seri, I also cried (even harder) for Mr. Rat. I think at this point of life, I cry more for life than love.

Chicago Typewriter

Writers that lived under Japanese rule in the 1930’s are reincarnated into a bestselling writer who is in a slump, a mysterious ghostwriter and an anti-fan of the bestselling writer.

The only reason why this series is 0.5 points less than CLOY is because it kept playing with my emotions. Whenever I am at the verge of crying, the next scene will be super light and funny. How can I cry? Let me release my emotions please! Although this series really hit me hard in the end and, tissues please! Again, I cried not because of love but because of the hard times and the camaraderie.

I can’t help but compare CLOY and Chicago Typewriter. Both are good but I think I really like the latter.

I really like Yoo Ah In specially when his character is cool and composed with a bit of arrogance.

Chicago Typewriter' Will the Special Episode Raise Its Rating ...

I like that this has a mix of fantasy and that 1930s setting. For me this is quite unique as most of the dramas are either modern, Joseon Dynasty, and North vs South.

I also really like the OST, Satellite by Saltnpaper. Maybe because it’s English and the genre is really my type, something that will go on my playlist. This song kept playing in my head, it’s something you can’t ignore while watching the series.

As you can see, I really liked all the series/movie that I’ve watched recently.

Whenever a series piques my attention, I would look for it on Anaven’s Blog and check her rating first (haha). Here’s her review of Chicago Typewriter.

  1. Hi, it’s been a while since I’ve been here to your site. I hope you are well. As much as possible I don’t want to watch Korean series but then one vlogger Avelovinit said she is watching it and it seems really good as it was also highly recommended… so I tried and unfortunately… I am hooked. Yes like you too late and I still have 2 episodes left as of the moment. Is there any cases there in the Maldives?

      1. I’m curious are these cases coming from the tourists? because here it started from a citizens who traveled to Italy & Germany & some tourists from Europe but we had a few cases too. I don’t want to binge watch Korean drama I think 1 or 2 will be enough haha!

        1. Nope. These are locals and expats working in Male’. The resorts where the tourists stayed before the lockdown were all pretty safe. The problem is in Male, such a small and crowded city. The virus can easily spread, the people didn’t take it seriously. I think they felt invincible. They kept roaming around the city amidst the virus threat and now, 1000+ cases in a very small city.
