Aloha! 50 First Dates

On the evening of February the 14th, we had a Movie Night by the Beach. Bean bags were scattered randomly, waiters were taking orders of cocktails and beers, palm trees were swayed by the wind, sky was brightened up by millions of stars, 50 First Dates was played on the screen.

I have seen this movie for the nth time but I was still very excited to watch it. I was also excited to know how I would react to this movie now and compare it to my reaction when I was a lot younger.

I laughed throughout the movie though I’ve seen and heard the silly jokes several times already. Jokes that millennials might not laugh at, jokes that could not have been funny if the role had been played by someone else other than Adam Sandler.

I still fell for the efforts made to make Lucy (Drew Barrymore) fall in love over and over again specially that scene when Henry (Adam Sandler)  was playing the ukulele by the beach, trying to fit in so many words in one beat. Just like us when in love, trying to fit in so much love in one heart beat.

The movie still have the kilig factor even after all these years, after seeing several other romcoms or chick flick, however you may call it. Maybe it’s because of Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler that’s why I still found the old antics cute.

There’s one thing that struck me though. Lucy’s condition of daily amnesia (which is not real of course) and of her family doing the same thing over and over again everyday which, while watching the movie, might have made us pity the situation of Lucy’s father and brother. But their situation is just the same as our daily lives. We do the same thing almost every day for a month, for a year and so on, not for a family member like Lucy but for ourselves, for us to live, for us to survive.

I also realized that sometimes, when everything in our lives seems like a mess, when we’ve forgotten about all the good things, people like Henry would come into our lives and make us remember all the sweet things and enjoy life again even just for a day.

This movie also reminded me that no matter how bad things can be, we would always have another day to start anew.

Overall, this won’t be the last time that I would see this movie. It still pulls my heartstrings each time I watch it.

  2. I love the way you related Lucy’s adverse memory condition to how silly we often act in our lives trying to survive our daily challenges; and that how we tend to forget the good about the things we’ve got or all we’ve been through.
Like the movie, this post is just as sweet and inspiring. I love also the line “when we’re in love…we try to overcrowd everything in one heartbeat” which is true. Like tomorrow has already ceased to exists.
    Lovely post! ☺
